Story Overview

Isabella Hartwell vanished from her penthouse at the top of the Whitmore Building at 12:03 a.m. The suite was locked from the inside. The security system was blind for exactly four minutes. The guest list from her private dinner—eleven names—has produced eleven different accounts of where everyone was when the elevator chimed. Detective Marcus Vale has the first night to find something solid before the press cordon, the family lawyers, and the building's ownership group all arrive in the same morning. He has no body, no note, no struggle, and a single black silk glove on the balcony. He has, by his own count, until sunrise.

The Locked Room

Detective Marcus Vale arrives at the Whitmore Building forty minutes after the call. The suite is sealed, the security feed is missing four minutes, and the only thing on the balcony is a single black silk glove. He has until dawn.

Main Characters

These profiles stay visible at the story level so late-arriving readers can catch up quickly.

Detective Marcus Vale
Lead Detective, Major Crimes

Detective Marcus Vale

Marcus has been a detective for fifteen years and a major-crimes detective for six. He solves cases by finding the one detail that does not fit and pulling it until everything else comes loose. He has been wrong twice in his career. Both times, he knew it before the verdict. He has not yet decided whether this will be the third.

Isabella Hartwell
The Missing Heiress

Isabella Hartwell

Twenty-nine years old, sole heir to the Hartwell trust, and—according to everyone who knew her—the kind of person who never went anywhere without three people knowing exactly where she was going. She kept a ledger. She kept appointments. She kept a small private safe that was opened sixteen minutes before she disappeared. Marcus has not yet met her, only the shape she left behind.

Vivienne Hartwell
Cousin, Sole Surviving Relative

Vivienne Hartwell

Vivienne is composed in the precise way that suggests she has been composed for hours before anyone arrived to test her. She is Isabella's only remaining family, the named alternate beneficiary of the Hartwell estate, and—by her own statement—was on the eighth-floor terrace at 12:03 a.m. The dinner staff log her leaving the eighth-floor terrace at 11:57. No one has corrected her about this yet.

Pierre Lavalle
Night Concierge, the Whitmore

Pierre Lavalle

Fifteen years at the Whitmore desk. Pierre has the particular skill of seeing without appearing to look, which has made him useful to a great many people who would not want to be observed. He was at his post between 11:45 and 12:10. His written statement covers that window with the precision of a man who has rehearsed it.
